Greece’s climate is varied but can be generally classified as a Mediterranean climate even along the coast. Summers are dry and hot with about 7 months of almost constant sunshine usually between April and November. The rest of the year is generally much cooler and sees a period of rainfall from November until the end of March or beginning of April. Occasional showers do occur during summer however they are brief and are uncommon.
Spring and autumn weather is the most pleasant, while the summer is hot and dry. Winters are mild in Crete and Rhodes and cooler as one moves north as well as inland. The prevailing summer winds are northerly. The seasonal wind of summer, called Etesian in Greece because of its seasonal character, but better known by its Turkish name Meltemi, sets in about May and lasts until September. It blows at its strongest in July and August when it can reach force 7 and even 8 on occasions. Violent storms occur only in winter, February being a particularly bad month, but overall the weather is pleasant and extreme conditions are rarely known.
Boat Cruising Seasons
Greece’s best weather is from May to June and September to October when it is pleasantly warm and the northern meltémi winds provide a cooling breeze. However from about mid-July to mid-August temperatures rise and the sun can be very strong so heavy or outdoor activity is generally avoided. Although most tourists arrive in summer to enjoy the warm weather and beaches, the off season during November to February is also a great time to visit as temperatures are mild and the country is far less busy, however it’s not exactly beach weather either.
